Tararudee vs Jones — a career-high Thai against an Australian teenager

Two qualifiers, one head-to-head already on the books, and one of the more interesting age gaps in the first round. Lanlana Tararudee arrives at a career-best ranking and was the second seed in Saturday’s qualifying draw. Emerson Jones arrives five days short of her eighteenth birthday, having come through the longest match of the pair. It is a genuinely good first-round match dressed up as a formality.

The matchup

Tararudee, the Thai right-hander born in July 2004, is the more advanced of the two on paper. She is ranked in the high seventies, which is her career high, meaning she is playing the best tennis of her life rather than living off an earlier peak. At a little over five feet seven she is not an overpowering player, but she has been the more consistent winner of matches at this level all season, and she was seeded second in qualifying for a reason.

Jones, the Australian born in August 2008, is the story of the week and turns eighteen in five days’ time. She is ranked around 139 with a career high of 129, numbers that are remarkable for her age and that place her closer to Tararudee than the seedings suggested. She hits with more natural aggression than her opponent and she has the ceiling to beat anyone in this section on a good day; what she does not yet have is the accumulated experience of managing a bad one.

They have met once, and Tararudee won it.

Form & conditions

Tararudee’s route through qualifying was the more economical: a 6-3, 6-4 win over Zheng, straightforward enough that she will have come off court with plenty left. Jones needed three sets and a good deal more time, losing a first-set tiebreak to Varvara Lepchenko before responding with a 6-0 second set and closing it out 6-4 in the decider.

That is the crux of the turnaround question. Both are on a one-day return, but only one of them needed three sets to get here, and it is the seventeen-year-old. The counterweight is that young players recover quickly, and the shape of her win suggests a player whose level rose rather than fell as the evening went on.

The deciding factor

Whether Jones can compress the match. Her best route is to take the ball early, shorten rallies and put Tararudee under time pressure, because a long, attritional contest against a fitter, more experienced opponent on the back of a three-setter is the least appealing version of this for her. Tararudee’s plan is the mirror image: extend, absorb, make the teenager hit one more ball than she wants to, and let the legs decide the third set.

The call

The lean is Tararudee, with low-medium confidence. She has the ranking, the previous meeting, the fresher body and the more reliable week-to-week record, and those four things pointing the same way is enough to make her the pick. But Jones is improving quickly enough that any assessment of her based on last month’s evidence is probably already out of date, and this is exactly the kind of match where a talented teenager announces herself.
