Khachanov vs Tomic — the seed against the comeback nobody scripted

Preview · Mifel Tennis Open, Los Cabos (ATP 250) · Second round · 29 July 2026

Karen Khachanov begins his week here; Bernard Tomic has already had one of the more improbable weeks of his career. The fourth seed received a bye into the second round, which means his first ball of the tournament will be struck against a 33-year-old Australian who got into the main draw by the back door and then dropped a single game in his opener. It is a strange, compelling collision of trajectories.

The matchup

Khachanov, 30, is ranked around No. 26 and is the highest-ranked player in this quarter of the draw. He is a former world No. 8 with fourteen tour titles, a big first serve and the sort of flat, heavy ball-striking that translates well to a quick Mexican court. The bye is worth something at a 250 in late July — it also means he arrives cold, which is exactly the scenario that produces awkward second rounds.

Tomic, 33 and ranked in the region of No. 170, is the story of the tournament so far. He withdrew from qualifying and still made the main draw as a lucky loser, then beat Mexican qualifier Álex Hernández in 46 minutes, conceding one game. It was his first ATP main-draw hard-court win since January 2021, and it followed a Challenger title — his first in eight years — won immediately before travelling to Los Cabos. He has spoken openly about wanting to get back inside the top 100.

The two have never played each other. Given their overlapping careers, that is itself a reminder of how far Tomic has been from this level for how long.

Form & hard courts

Khachanov's 2026 has been solid rather than spectacular. He reached the third round at Wimbledon before losing to Flavio Cobolli in a match undone by 53 unforced errors and a wretched three-from-sixteen return on break points; there was also an early exit in Halle against Ethan Quinn and a second-round loss at Roland Garros. Hard courts remain his most reliable surface and the North American swing is traditionally where he does his best work of the second half of the season.

Tomic's hard-court instincts have never left him — the flat, low, awkward ball and the sense of timing are still there, and his historic hard-court win rate remains the best of any surface. What has been missing is durability and matches against genuine top-30 opposition. He has also won a notably high share of deciding sets recently, which is not nothing.

The deciding factor

Whether Tomic can shorten points. If the rallies extend and Khachanov gets to swing freely from the baseline, the physical and power gap becomes decisive fairly quickly. Tomic's route is disruption: change of pace, early returns, denying the Russian rhythm long enough to make him doubt. Khachanov's break-point conversion has been shaky at times this year, and Tomic converts opportunities at a better rate — on paper, at least.

The call

Khachanov, with medium confidence. The class gap is real and the surface suits him; the caveat is a cold opening match against a man playing with nothing to lose and considerable momentum.
