This is the tie of the round, and one of the most compelling first-round draws of the entire hard-court swing. Alexandra Eala, climbing towards a career high near the top 30, faces Zheng Qinwen — a former world No. 4 and reigning Olympic champion — who arrives on a wildcard with her ranking down around No. 123 after a lengthy, injury-ravaged spell. On paper Eala is the favourite. In reality, few opening matches carry this much danger.

The matchup

The subplot writes itself. When these two last met — the 2023 Asian Games semi-final — Zheng won 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 on her way to gold, with Eala taking bronze. This is less about tactics than about which version of Zheng walks on court.

A cautious lean to Eala, on ranking, form and fitness — she is the more reliable bet to be at her level for two-plus hours. But the confidence here is genuinely low: a healthy, in-rhythm Zheng is comfortably the better player, and the head-to-head, however dated, belongs to her. Treat Eala as a slight favourite in a coin-flip match, and do not be remotely surprised if the Olympic champion turns the clock back.
