Beşiktaş vs Midtjylland — a slender lead, and a red card that still hurts

Beşiktaş take a one-goal lead to Herning, and the honest reading is that it should have been more. Vincenzo Italiano’s first competitive match in charge produced a 1-0 win at the Tüpraş Stadium against a Midtjylland side reduced to ten men inside a quarter of an hour — a scenario that ought to have yielded a decisive cushion and instead delivered the thinnest one available. Now the Danes go home with a single goal to find and ninety minutes to find it.
The matchup
The first leg turned on the fifteenth minute, when Friday Etim was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Tiago Djalo. Beşiktaş duly took the lead through Orkun Kökçü on twenty-six minutes, a curling finish from the left side of the box, and looked briefly like running away with it — Amir Murillo struck the crossbar three minutes later. But Midtjylland reorganised, defended the rest of the evening with real discipline, and had their own best chance late on when Alexander Nübel denied Philip Billing from close range.
The return is at the MCH Arena in Herning, a genuinely awkward trip: a tight, atmospheric ground where Midtjylland have a long habit of making bigger clubs uncomfortable. Etim is suspended, which is a real loss given how the tie has gone.
Form & context
Midtjylland are the sharper side by some distance, and that is the crux of this. Mike Tullberg’s team have already opened their Superliga campaign with a 3-2 win over SønderjyskE, came through a near-flawless pre-season — including a heavy win over Cardiff City — and were in the Europa League knockout rounds last season before going out on penalties to Nottingham Forest. They know this competition intimately. Beyond Etim’s suspension, Victor Bak is a doubt after coming off at half-time domestically, and Ousmane Diao, Mikel Gogorza and Junior Brumado are unavailable.
Beşiktaş are in a rawer place. Their pre-season was patchy — two wins from six friendlies, with defeats to Widzew Łódź and Spartak Trnava — and Italiano was only appointed in June, meaning the ideas are still bedding in. Wilfred Ndidi is out with an ankle problem, Felix Uduokhai is serving a European suspension, and Leandro Trossard remains on extended leave following the World Cup. Djalo, at least, came through his first-leg scare.
The deciding factor
Conditioning versus quality. Midtjylland are further along in their season and playing in front of their own crowd; Beşiktaş have the individually better squad but a manager still installing his methods and a team that has not yet found consistency. If Beşiktaş concede early, the pressure on a side low on rhythm could tell quickly. If they score first, the tie is finished.
The call
A narrow lean towards Beşiktaş advancing, with low confidence — this feels closer to a coin toss than the first-leg scoreline suggests. Midtjylland’s sharpness and home advantage make a 1-1 entirely likely on the night, which would still leave Beşiktaş through on aggregate. But if this goes to extra time, the fitter side is not the one from Istanbul, and that is the scenario Beşiktaş must avoid.
