Austria Vienna vs FK Liepāja — two goals of comfort, and a former captain in the way

Austria Vienna did the difficult part last week, winning 2-0 in Latvia to take control of this tie before their domestic season has even properly begun. They return to the Generali Arena needing only to avoid a collapse. Liepāja need two goals to force extra time and three to win outright, against a side that has looked sharp all summer — and they must find them in a stadium where Austria will be pushing for an early goal to kill any lingering doubt.
The matchup
The first leg in Liepāja was efficiently done. Florian Wustinger scored just past the half-hour and a second arrived through Wels shortly after the interval, and from there Austria managed the game without alarm. Two-nil away is the ideal European result: enough of a cushion to plan around, not so much that complacency becomes a real risk.
There is a nice sub-plot in the reverse fixture. Liepāja are captained by Marvin Martins, who made 85 appearances for Austria Vienna between 2021 and 2025 before moving to Latvia. He returns to a ground he knows intimately, needing to organise a back line that has already conceded twice to his old employers.
Form & context
Austria’s preparation has been strong. They won a string of pre-season matches comfortably and then put five past Wiener Sport-Club at the weekend, with Johannes Eggestein helping himself to a hat-trick — a useful sign for a team whose main question this summer was where the goals would come from. Stephan Helm has reported an essentially full squad bar long-term absentees Romeo Vucic and Sakaria Botić, though Aleksandar Dragović is understood to be unavailable after a head injury at the weekend and Philipp Wisinger is not yet ready to start. Helm’s stated approach is straightforward: press high, win the ball in the opponent’s half, and exploit whatever spaces Liepāja leave.
Liepāja, fifth in the Virslīga last season, are not a bad side. They beat Dečić Tuzi to reach this round and have a genuine goalscorer in Ede Oloko, who joined in June and has been prolific domestically. They also have the rhythm of a mid-season team — they beat FS Jelgava 2-0 in the league recently — whereas Austria are still finding their competitive gears with the Bundesliga not yet underway. That rhythm advantage is real, but it did not translate into anything at home.
The deciding factor
Whether Liepāja can score first, and early. Their only path involves making Austria uncomfortable inside the opening half-hour, because a single Austria goal ends the tie mathematically as well as psychologically. Oloko will get chances if the Latvians can find him; the problem is that Austria’s press is designed precisely to stop the ball ever reaching him cleanly.
The call
Austria Vienna to advance, medium-to-high confidence. The Viennese are the better team, they are in form, they are at home and they have a two-goal head start. A low-confidence lean on the match itself: another Austria win, with Eggestein an obvious focal point. That is a read on the pattern, not a promise — Liepāja’s away record has been decent and Austria may well rotate.
