Alexander Zverev arrives at Wimbledon carrying the No. 2 seed and, for the first time, the aura of a Grand Slam champion after his Roland Garros triumph. The matchup

Zverev is the complete grass-court operator on grade: a huge, reliable serve, clean baseline geometry and the reach to smother returns. Royer is a clay-court craftsman by trade — three of his Challenger titles have come on the dirt — and grass remains foreign terrain, with this only a handful of tour-level matches deep into his experience on the surface. Their sole prior meeting came at the Shanghai Masters in October 2025, where Zverev prevailed but limped over the line, needing treatment for a toe problem while serving it out. Royer, in other words, has already tested him once.

Form & grass

Zverev reached the semi-finals in Halle on the eve of the Championships, exactly the kind of grass reps a top seed wants, and he opened here without alarm. Royer's route has been more improbable: he came through qualifying and then beat home hope Harry Wendelken in four sets in the first round, only his fifth or so career singles match on grass. He has actually won a couple of his previous grass outings at the All England Club, so the surface is not wholly hostile — but a best-of-five examination against a Slam champion is a different order of challenge.

The deciding factor

Serve and stamina. Over five sets, Zverev's superior first-strike weaponry and grass-court movement should simply wear Royer down; the Frenchman's game is built for longer, grinding rallies that grass rarely rewards. Royer's best hope is to keep it tight early, drag Zverev into tie-breaks, and pray the German's occasional fragility under pressure resurfaces. If Zverev serves at his ceiling, that window never opens.

Zverev é o operador completo na relva: serviço enorme e fiável, geometria limpa a partir do fundo do court e envergadura para sufocar devoluções. Royer é um artesão da terra batida — três dos seus títulos Challenger chegaram no pó de tijolo — e a relva continua a ser terreno estranho, com esta a ser apenas uma mão-cheia de encontros na superfície ao mais alto nível.
