On paper this is a tidy little mismatch: a former world No. 3 against a player who has spent most of her career on the fringes of the top 60. Look a shade closer, though, and Maria Sakkari against Kamilla Rakhimova is one of the more awkward second-round assignments the Greek could have drawn. The name still carries weight; the recent evidence does not always follow.

The matchup

Sakkari, the higher-ranked of the pair and a former top-three player, holds a 2-0 lead in their previous meetings, the most recent a three-set win in Cincinnati on hard courts. That head-to-head is the cleanest argument in her favour. This comes down to whether Sakkari's superior weight of shot outlasts Rakhimova's comfort on the surface. If the Greek serves well and shortens rallies, her class should tell. If the match drifts into extended baseline exchanges, Rakhimova's grass-court instincts and lower error count give her a real foothold. The forehand battle, and Sakkari's habit of leaking tight matches from winning positions, may decide it.

A lean towards Sakkari on ranking and the H2H, but with genuinely low confidence. Rakhimova is live here, and an upset would surprise nobody who has watched her on grass. Slight edge to the favourite, three sets not unlikely.
