Roman Safiullin arrived at SW19 through qualifying and already owns the upset of the first round. Now the Russian must prove the adrenaline of beating Andrey Rublev can carry into a meeting with Botic van de Zandschulp, a Dutchman who treats grass as a comfort zone.

The matchup

Safiullin had to come through qualifying simply to make the main draw, then produced the result of the opening day, dismissing the 12th seed Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-7(6) 3-6 6-3 7-6(14-12). He saved four match points in a deciding-set tie-break that crept to 14-12, a contest of almost four hours. Van de Zandschulp had a calmer afternoon, recovering from the loss of the second set to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3 6-7(2) 6-4 6-0, broken only once across the match. The pair have met once before on Tour, with Safiullin edging it; there is little between them on paper.

Form & grass

This is the more revealing question. Safiullin is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist who clearly enjoys the surface, and he now has four wins in a row counting his qualifying run. Confidence is not in short supply. Van de Zandschulp, for his part, remains a genuinely awkward grass-courter — a clean ball-striker with a serve that holds up and the variety to disrupt opponents who prefer rhythm. Neither man is a stranger to deep runs at the majors, and both will fancy a place in the third round.

The deciding factor

Freshness against rhythm. Safiullin has spent far longer on court, and that Rublev marathon could either leave him riding a wave or quietly drain his legs over best-of-five. Van de Zandschulp will look to make the early exchanges physical, test whether the qualifier's level holds when the emotional charge of the Rublev win fades, and lean on his serve to keep the sets tight. If Safiullin's first delivery fires as it did on Monday, the Dutchman will struggle to create chances.

The call

This has the look of a four or five-set examination, with both men likely to claim a set. Safiullin's grass pedigree and surging confidence give him a slight edge, but Van de Zandschulp is the steadier presence and will not hand anything over.
