For the first time since the Williams sisters contested the 2009 final, two American women seeded inside the top ten will share a Wimbledon court, and they open Centre Court's Tuesday programme. Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed, walks out onto the most famous lawn in tennis for the very first time in her career; across the net stands Coco Gauff, the seventh seed and the box-office name, playing the best fortnight she has ever produced at the All England Club. The matchup

Style is the story. Pegula is the metronome — flat, early, relentlessly consistent, happy to take time away and rush an opponent into errors. Gauff's answer is her defence and her extraordinary court coverage, which on grass can turn a flat hitter's winners into merely very good approach shots. Gauff even conceded that flat ball-strikers are "not sometimes the best matchup" for her, yet she also felt she was winning the baseline exchanges against Bencic rather than simply surviving them. The serve looms large too: if Gauff's delivery holds under pressure, she can dictate; if it wobbles, Pegula pounces.

The call

Pegula has the ranking, the head-to-head and a lifetime of consistency, and the absence of grand-slam scar tissue is beginning to read less as a curse and more as freedom. But Gauff is younger, moving beautifully, battle-hardened by three straight deciders and roared on by Centre Court. Expect a tight, high-quality contest decided in the margins — and lean, narrowly, towards Gauff to edge a three-setter and reach her first Wimbledon semi-final.
