Olympique Lyonnais vs AC Sparta Praha — a record Prague would rather forget

Six meetings, five Lyon wins, one draw, no Sparta victory: the head-to-head between these clubs is one of the tidier sequences in modern European football, and the most recent instalment, a Europa League meeting Lyon won 3-0, did nothing to disturb it. Sparta host the first leg at Letná knowing all of that, and knowing too that the one column in which they currently hold an advantage has nothing to do with history.
The matchup
This is a League Path tie, and both clubs come into it having fallen just short domestically. Sparta finished second in the Czech First League behind Slavia; Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1, a point away from a place that would have spared them August football altogether. Brian Priske’s Sparta are therefore in season and playing competitive matches, having beaten Zlín 3-1 at the weekend, while Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon do not begin their league campaign until later in the month and come in on a diet of friendlies, the last of which was a 4-0 defeat by Real Betis.
The winner has already been paired with the winner of Fenerbahçe against Sturm Graz in the play-off round, which sharpens the stakes considerably for both.
Form & context
Sparta’s team news is the more alarming of the two. Ondřej Penxa and Magnus Kofod Andersen are out with knee problems, Elias Cobbault and Emmanuel Uchenna with groin injuries, and Peter Vindahl, Patrik Vydra, Sivert Mannsverk and Jakub Martinec are also unavailable, with Roman Macek doubtful. Pavel Šulc’s departure removed their most productive attacking player of last season, though Jonatan Braut Brunes marked his debut with a goal. Set against that, Letná has been a fortress: Sparta are unbeaten there across their last six competitive home matches.
Lyon’s uncertainty is of a different kind. Loïs Openda has arrived on loan from Juventus and Mads Bidstrup from Salzburg, while several first-team names have been linked with exits during the window, leaving Fonseca to pick a side that has not yet been asked a competitive question this season.
The deciding factor
Rhythm against ceiling. Sparta are fitter, sharper and at home, and in a one-off first leg those things matter more than reputations. Lyon simply have more players capable of settling a tight European tie, and over 180 minutes that tends to surface — but their lack of competitive minutes is a real vulnerability on a loud night in Prague, particularly early on.
The call
For the first leg, the lean is towards Lyon avoiding defeat rather than winning it: a draw or a one-goal margin either way looks the likeliest shape, and that is a narrow lean, low confidence. On the tie, the lean is Lyon to progress, with medium confidence, on squad depth, the second leg at home and a head-to-head record Sparta have never managed to break.
