Kostyuk vs Keys — a career-best season against a perfect head-to-head

The pick of Thursday's slate closes our card at 14:00 local. Marta Kostyuk is the No. 10 seed and, at world No. 11, in the finest season of her career. Madison Keys is seeded 19th and ranked 23rd, but she has won both of their previous meetings and has lost only three times in her last ten matches. Something has to give.
The matchup
Both came through the previous round without much trouble. Kostyuk beat the Canadian Katherine Sebov in straight sets, surviving a scrappy opener that went to a tie-break before she pulled clear. Keys was cleaner still, brushing aside Antonia Ružić 6-1, 6-2 on the front foot throughout. Both entered on byes, both have one match in the legs, and neither carries a fatigue disadvantage into Thursday.
The head-to-head reads 2-0 to Keys — Wimbledon in 2023 and again in 2024, the latter 6-4, 6-3, with the American taking all four sets played. It is a spotless record and a genuine warning. It is also entirely a grass-court record. This is the first time these two have met on a hard court, and the version of Kostyuk that Keys beat on grass two years ago is not the player standing across the net now.
Form & hard courts
Kostyuk's 2026 is the story. She has won a WTA 1000 title, reached a maiden Wimbledon semi-final by beating Jasmine Paolini, and compiled a season record of 28-6 — a win rate above 80 per cent. The surface-adjusted numbers have caught up: her hard-court Elo sits near 1997, inside the top five on the surface, and her overall Elo is top-six on tour. She has also been comfortably the better player in deciding sets this season, winning around seven in ten.
Keys is not out of form — 30-12 for the year and seven wins in her last ten is a decent run, and a former world No. 5 with this much firepower can beat anyone on a fast court. The qualification is that her specifically hard-court record in 2026 has been middling, and her hard-court Elo, around 1888, sits some hundred and ten points below Kostyuk's. Her recent surge has leaned heavily on the grass swing, where her career numbers have always been strongest.
The deciding factor
Whether Keys can keep the rallies short enough. Her path is the obvious one — big first serve, forehand on the rise, take the racket out of Kostyuk's hands before the Ukrainian can establish depth. If the first-serve percentage holds, she wins. If it dips, Kostyuk is the more reliable athlete from the back of the court, converts break points at a noticeably higher rate, and is far more likely to win a third set.

We are respecting the surface data over the head-to-head, because the head-to-head was built on a different surface and a different version of Kostyuk.
