Germany will see the vast majority of the ball; the question is whether Wirtz and Musiala can find the half-spaces to prise open a back line that does not panic. If Germany force the issue too early and leave gaps, Alfaro's side have the runners to punish them.

Expect Nagelsmann's possession-heavy 4-2-3-1 against Alfaro's deep, narrow 4-4-2 block. Germany's full-backs will push high to stretch the pitch, with Joshua Kimmich pulling the strings and Wirtz and Musiala rotating between the lines. Paraguay will sit, soak and look to spring forward through their physical front men once they win it back. Set pieces could be decisive in a game that may stay tight for long stretches; Germany's edge in individual quality should eventually tell, but only if they keep their composure.

The takeaway

This is a favourite's banana skin. Germany have the talent to win comfortably and the fragility — defensively reshuffled, occasionally loose — to be dragged into exactly the kind of low-scoring grind Paraguay crave. The longer it stays goalless, the more Alfaro's plan grows teeth.
