The bracket has handed England the tie nobody in the camp wanted this early: co-hosts Mexico, in front of a full Estadio Azteca, at roughly 2,000 metres of thin Mexico City air. On paper Thomas Tuchel's side are favourites — deeper, higher-ranked, richer in Champions League minutes. But few venues on earth flatten a European team's lungs quite like this one, and El Tri have spent a fortnight looking like a team who believe their moment has arrived.

The matchup

Tuchel, the German appointed in October 2024 and in charge since the turn of the year, leans on a spine of genuine quality: Harry Kane leading the line, Jude Bellingham pulling the strings, and a defence that has largely done its job. Mexico, under the returning Javier Aguirre — a third World Cup on the touchline for El Vasco, with Rafael Márquez alongside him — are built around captain Edson Álvarez's legs in midfield, the veteran calm of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in a record sixth finals, and a front line of Raúl Jiménez and Santiago Giménez that has clicked at just the right time.

Form & context

Mexico have been the tidier story. They topped Group A with three straight wins and, by most accounts, a clean defensive sheet, then dispatched Ecuador in the last 32 to snap a knockout drought stretching back four decades — Jiménez, now second on their all-time scoring list, again decisive. England topped Group L but have been more uneven: a bright opening win over Croatia, a goalless afternoon against Ghana, and a nervy last-32 tie in which Kane had to rescue them late after conceding first. Group winners, yes; convincing, not quite.

The deciding factor

Altitude and atmosphere. England will have to manage the ball, not chase it — Mexico's high tempo and the crowd's noise are designed to drag opponents into a breathless, error-strewn scrap. If Tuchel's men keep possession, slow the game and let Bellingham and Kane pick their moment, the individual quality should tell. If they get sucked into a track meet, the Azteca becomes a very lonely place. Set-pieces, where England carry a clear edge, may prove the release valve.

The call

Lean England, but only just, and with low-to-medium confidence. The talent gap is real and Kane tends to deliver on nights like this — yet the venue, the altitude and a Mexico side riding genuine belief make this the most hazardous test England could have drawn. Expect it tight, expect it late, and expect the hosts to make England earn every metre.
