The most experienced runner left in the Umag draw meets its highest surviving seed. Damir Džumhur, the 34-year-old Bosnian and former world No. 23, has quietly gone about his business on the clay he has always loved, dispatching Juan Carlos Prado Angelo in straight sets. Standing in his way is Matteo Arnaldi, the fourth seed, an Italian with a former top-30 pedigree who needed three sets to see off Federico Agustín Gómez. The matchup

This is craft against clean ball-striking. Džumhur is a throwback clay operator — compact, superb on the move, a master of tempo who mixes spins, heights and angles to pull bigger hitters out of rhythm. He rarely overpowers anyone, but on slow dirt he does not have to. Arnaldi is the more naturally offensive player, with a heavier forehand and the ability to take control of a rally when he is dictating, but he can be dragged into scrappy exchanges he would rather avoid. The seed is the bigger weapon; the veteran is the better problem-solver.

Form & surface

The route into this quarter-final may prove telling. Džumhur's straight-sets win banked energy and rhythm; Arnaldi's three-setter cost him time on court and, potentially, fresh legs — no small thing in the heavy, sun-baked Umag clay, where matches are won by the fresher and more patient body. Both are comfortable on the surface, but the Bosnian's ability to extend points and drain his opponent's legs is tailor-made for these conditions, and for wearing down a man who prefers to end points sooner.

The deciding factor

Tempo control. If Arnaldi can impose his forehand, take the ball early and keep the rallies on his terms, his greater firepower should tell. If Džumhur succeeds in slowing the match down, changing rhythm and making the Italian generate his own pace over and over in the heat, the physical and mental toll tends to fall on the bigger hitter. The scoreboard pressure of being the seeded favourite is another quiet factor working against Arnaldi.

The call
