Few round-of-16 ties in Båstad carry this much intrigue. Nuno Borges, the Portuguese fifth seed and a former champion on this very court, meets Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian stylist whose game once belonged among the world's elite and who is now feeling his way back after a long spell away. It is the settled top-fifty seed against the comeback man; the present against a glorious, complicated past. On Swedish clay, with both having survived their openers, the collision promises quality and no shortage of emotion.

Borges comes in ranked comfortably inside the top fifty and got his week going with a tidy, controlled dismissal of the teenage French prospect Moïse Kouamé, 6-4, 6-2. Endurance and depth. If Dimitrov can keep the points short, serve well and lean on his variety to steal cheap games, he can compress the match into the kind of sharp, streaky contest that hides his fitness questions. But if Borges extends the rallies, moves him corner to corner and makes him play a third and fourth ball on every point, the freshness gap will start to bite. The longer this lasts, the more it favours the man who has been playing and winning on clay all season.

Borges is the sounder pick — better ranked, better suited to the surface, at home in front of a supportive crowd and simply the more match-hardened of the two right now.
