Two of American tennis's biggest ball-strikers collide on Independence Day, with sixth seed Amanda Anisimova, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, taking on former Australian Open champion Madison Keys, seeded 26th. Anisimova is the higher seed and the marginal favourite, but there is precious little between them: both hit enormous, flat, first-strike tennis, and on a fast grass court either woman is capable of blowing the other off the baseline on a good day. It is arguably the pick of the round.

The matchup

This is a genuine heavyweight bout between two players who thrive on the same brand of aggressive, front-foot tennis. Anisimova owns one of the finest backhands in the women's game and reached the final here a year ago, a run that announced her as a grass-court force even if it ended in a chastening defeat. Keys is a former major champion with a thunderous serve and forehand, and few players hit through the court harder. Because their styles mirror one another so closely, rhythm and margins will swing sharply — the player controlling the centre of the court and dictating first will hold the whip hand.

Form & grass

Both have reached the third round in solid fashion, Anisimova coming through an all-American test earlier in the week and Keys advancing with her trademark power to the fore. Anisimova's run to the final last year gives her the stronger recent grass pedigree at this specific event, while Keys's serve is a weapon that travels beautifully to the surface. On current evidence there is little to separate them, which is exactly what makes this such a compelling watch.

The deciding factor

The serve and the first ball. In a contest between two big hitters, cheap points and early control of rallies decide everything. If Keys's serve fires and her forehand lands, she can shorten points and take the racquet out of Anisimova's hands. If Anisimova's return finds its range and her backhand starts flowing, she can turn defence into attack in a single stroke. Whoever imposes first, and stays steadier in the tight games, should edge it.

The call

This is close to a coin-toss between two dangerous compatriots, and Keys has the firepower to win it on her day. But Anisimova's grass-court run here last year, her return and her slightly higher standing give her the narrowest of edges. Lean to Anisimova, low confidence.
